Division 7 - Thermal And Moisture Protection

Section 01420 - Composite Building Panels


PART 1 - General


1.1 General Requirements

Supply "Granex" Exposed Aggregate Panels by Graham Products Limited, 104 Maple Ave., Inglewood, Ontario as specified and as shown on the drawings.

1.3 Scope

1.3.1 Work included in this division shall include all labour, materials, equipment and services necessary to manufacture and erect the complete aggregate faced wall panel.

1.3.2 The work of this section shall include the following:

1. Granex wall panels
2. Granex soffit panels
3. Granex facia panels
4. Granex column covers
5. All sealants in joints
6. All necessary connection hardware for attachment of the above panels


1.4 Examination

Before commencing erection, the structure will be carefully examined and if any defects or discrepancies are discovered in the structure the General Contractor will be notified and work will not commence until corrective measures are taken.


1.5 Delivery and Storage

1.5.1 All units shall be transported in a manner to preclude damage
1.5.2 Remove all units which are cracked, broken or damaged beyond repair and replace with new.
1.5.3 All units must be stored on skids, under cover, in a dry place to be provided by the General Contractor.


1.6 Site Preparation

The General Contractor shall ensure that the site, particularly in the areas which are to receive the "Granex" panels is clear of all obstructions which would interfere with the storage of material and/or the use of appropriate installation equipment.


1.7 Qualification

The supplier must be able to demonstrate a minimum of 10 years experience and must have successfully completed at least 5 major projects in aggregate faced panels.


1.8 Guarantee

The material included in this section shall be subject to a 15 year Limited Warranty by the manufacturer (consult Graham Products Limited for full details).



PART 2 - Materials


2.1 Panels

Panels shall be surfaced with a natural stone aggregate embedded continuously in an integral glass fibre reinforced composite substrate of inorganic fillers and polyester resin.


2.2 Finish

Panels shall be (color) aggregate, series (5,10 or 20) size aggregate in (colour) matrix with type (I non-fire rated, II fire-rated).


2.3 Properties

Panels shall have the following physical properties:
	1. Flexural strength (ASTM D790) 1.09x1.0E+4 P.S.I.
	2. Flexural modulus (ASTM D790) 1.45x1.0E+6 P.S.I.
	3. Water absorption (ASTM D570) 0.47% by wt.
	4. Co-efficient of expansion (ASTM D696) .72x1.0E+5 in/in/°F
	5. Impact strength (ASTM D2444) 23 ft./lb.

2.4 Fasteners

Fasteners shall be stainless steel for installation to wood framing and shall be non-corrosive type self tapping for installation to steel framing. All fasteners shall have a colored head to match the aggregate as closely as possible.


2.5 Sealants

Sealants shall be one part polysulphide and shall be colour matched.


2.6 Thermal Break

Thermal break shall be exterior grade PVC compressive foam tape.


PART 3 - Execution


3.1 Installation

3.1.1	Panels shall be installed in accordance with manufacturers
recommendations, all work shall be performed by skilled workmen. 3.1.2 Field cutting of panels shall be done using a carborundum type
masonry blade. Edge residue from cutting shall be removed by using
compressed air or a bristle brush. 3.1.3 Fasteners shall be spaced at a maximum of 16" o.c. around the
perimeter and maximum of 16" o.c. in the field of the panel. Refer
to manufacturers Technical Guide. 3.1.4 Panels shall be spaced 1/4" to 3/8" apart. Joints shall be caulked
with an approved sealant matching the aggregate as closely as
possible. 3.1.5 All panel edges shall be supported by framing members.
